Hippocrates is the father of western medicine. He most famously discovered that all diseases begin in the gut. The immune system, hormonal system, and the nervous system is all housed within the digestive system. Therefore, if you have any challenges with any of those systems it is best to look at the gut first. The gut microbiome has most recently been studied in depth to discover all of the variables.
People often come into my practice, and ask how to improve gut health naturally. It is a process to restore gut health. The first aspect to gut healing involves being mindful of your diet. Understanding what you eat, why you eat what you eat is the first step. From there, we look at how the body digests food. Even if you are eating 100% healthy diet, if you are not digesting and assimilating the diet it does us no good.
As we look at digestion, we also assess metabolism, metabolic rate and how the body assimilates the nutrients derived from the food that you are eating. Digestion and assimilation is a process. There is a lot of confusion attached to nutrient. What to eat, when to eat, and how much to eat. There is no simple answer and what works for one person may not work for another.
This is why we recommend working with a trained professional who can guide you through the process. Our practice has both DIY plans as well as group plans available for people. We look at macro nutrients, the split between carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. We determine the macro splits and determine the best ratio for you as the individual based on your goals.
Once you get the nutrition down, then you can work on the digestion and assimilation. This is the building blocks to repairing and supporting your immune system, your hormonal system, and/or your neurological system.
Every parent would like their child to be successful in life – a winner, an autonomous, resilient, self-confident person, who is more often happy and satisfied than not – someone who conquers everyday challenges and leaves the battle without too much scarring. Good doctors near me are hard to come by, and just to be clear a doctor is a teacher, one who educates me on how to keep my child well, as well as provide me resources to help me in the process. My doctor wasn’t doing that, so I looked for a holistic doctor near me. Holistic doctors look at the big picture. They take into consideration, mental, emotional, spiritual, and even environmental as well as ancestral implications to health and advise me on how I can improve.
Brilliant scientist and Nobel Prize winner, Marie Curie said, “Life is not easy for any of us. But what of that? We must have perseverance and above all confidence in ourselves. We must believe that we are gifted for something and that this thing must be attained.” I was not born with a great family, they didn’t teach me how to love myself, how to support my emotions, or how to use those emotions for greater good. They would often mock me and put me down. I knew I did not want my daughter to experience these same things so I looked to anyone I could for help. I looked for teachers, therapists, good doctors near me, and of course a holistic doctor near me. At the time, I could not find a holistic doctor, other than a chiropractor. And while I respect chiropractors I do not consider them holistic.
Yes, perseverance is what it takes to deal with life’s difficulties each and every day. I had faced a lot o adversity in my own upbringing and life, but I did not want to put that on my daughter. I did know I wanted to teach her what it took to be successful.
A good holistic doctor near me could have posed these questions, such as how do we do that? How do we teach our children to stay persistent despite difficulties and delays in achieving success? Even allopathic good doctors near me wouldn’t ask me about my parenting, how things were going if I need resources, etc. It was mostly about if she has any diseases or problems. When I said no, I just needed to make sure she was well they would often look at me perplexed. So how do we prepare them for life without scaring them to death or putting crazy thoughts in there head.
Do we set them on our lap and tell them life is hard, but they need to be strong?
Do we put complicated tasks on their path to see how they’ll deal with them?
A holistic doctor near me or even good doctors near me could have taught me The best way to teach perseverance to kids is to read them stories. Spending quality time with your child and being patient can prove to be helpful in the process of learning for them. Reading stories about heroes and even introducing them to various cartoons or movies can be more beneficial than you might think. I remember when Inside Out came out in the movies. I was so excited about a movie discussing emotions, it allowed us to open a dialogue and for me to teach her more about emotions in a non threatening manner.
The “Hero’s Journey” is the standard template used in stories, fairy tales, and movie plots. It explains how the hero handles the situation, deals with the difficulties, solves the critical issues, and as a result, learns something new and significant. This is a great way to teach about problem solving, resilience, perseverance and becoming the “hero” in the child’s movie.
As a holistic doctor near me I teach for parents to share beneficial, perseverance-related messages with your child from heroic tales:
Everyone is good enough to be a hero, just like there are good doctors near me, even holistic ones. Most of the stories start by describing the hero’s life before the adventure begins with often humble beginnings. Here, a child will learn that heroes are common, regular, everyday people who encounter extraordinary situations. This is their opportunity to be extraordinary.
Kids don’t have to own superpowers to be persistent in dealing with life. Being who they are is their biggest power. Teaching children about what their gifts are an encouraging them to use them for their greatest good is helpful. We all have been given certain gifts from the creator. Help them discover these gifts by using the hero’s journey.
New adventures are all around us. An adventure doesn’t have to start dramatically. Kids just have to recognize it and accept it as challenging but not impossible. Everyday life is full of simple and complicated challenges. Many times we are presented with opportunities and it is our choice as to whether we take a star or not in the moment. Becoming a holistic doctor near me, was one of those moments. I was fed up with what was called good doctors near me where doing. I did not feel they were offering me practical tools necessary to help me with my child. Don’t get me wrong they were good doctors near me for what they did, but I found I needed more. I longed for those old school family doctors. So I decided to embark on a journey to become an old school family or holistic doctor near me.
The hero’s journey explains that anything that disrupts your daily life can be perceived as a challenge or an opportunity. For me, creating a practice that I would take my daughter, both excited me and motivated me.
It is okay to have doubts. You will often see heroes who have second thoughts, personal doubts, and often refuse to face the challenge at first. Look at Moses! Coming to Virginia in 2009 surrounded by non understanding, good doctors around me provided me many opportunities to doubt myself. Having self doubt teaches children that it’s okay to be scared or to value the comfort one’s hometown more than exotic adventure. I truly missed California for a long time, until I realized my role was to bring a holistic doctor near me to the local market so others could experience what I had learned for a long time.
It’s okay to receive support. Heroes usually have their mentors. This gives children a chance to learn that it’s okay to ask for help and accept support. When I came here I looked for good doctors near me, I also looked for a holistic doctor near me. I found a handful, many were older, aging out, and had practices that were more low key. I wanted to help bring holistic healthcare to the forefront. Perseverance is all about knowing when to give 100% of yourself, when to take a break, and when to share the burden. I am grateful for so many families that have trusted me to help teach these lessons and guide them through the process.
Mentors are here to provide the reality check, show the hero how to do things, and applaud the effort. I am grateful to those good doctors near me as well as the many holistic doctor s near me that took the time to meet with me. I truly felt supported coming to Virginia Beach as a new kid on the block.
The luck is ever-changing, but persistence pays off. Heroes in tales deal with various tests before they face the final ordeal. They meet their allies and enemies. They must focus on the end result. These are great lessons for teaching children resilience, keeping focused on what they want and desire, and not deviating from a mission or a plan.
This happens in a child’s everyday life too, but we don’t define those events in such a dramatic way. The child learns that even though their abilities are tested continuously, they gain deeper insight after accomplishing each task. With each new accomplishment comes a new opportunity to build self esteem.
Every journey comes with a lesson. The outcome of the hero’s journey (be it victory or defeat) doesn’t matter that much. What counts is the fact that, through facing and enduring challenges, the hero transforms and develops. Facing his fears, the hero grows as a person, learns many things, and finds fresh hope.As a holistic doctor near me, I have tried and failed many times to bring my vision to life, but it is with my willingness to learn, my commitment to the cause, and my dedication to families right to choose I have been able to become a hero in many families stories.
This helps children learn that being persistent pays off, even when they don’t achieve what they’ve planned. Gaining experience is just as valuable in a child’s life as succeeding. And understanding that even if they don’t win the first time, if they continue to try eventually they will hit their mark to succeed.
Planting the seed of perseverance in your child’s mind might seem complicated, but it is rather simple. Just ensure that you are there for them when they fall to validate their emotions and reward their steps forward, no matter how small they are. Guiding your child through the hero’s journey is a perfect way to start.
Most importantly, be a person who doesn’t give up easily and your child will learn to do the same. You can be their hero, guide them through the hero’s journey!
