Holistic Prenatal Care: How does it all work? [Birth & Postpartum]

6.0 Holistic Prenatal Care How does it all work

You have just gotten the news! You’re pregnant. You’re excited. You’re nervous. You have every wave of emotion coming at you all at once. Have you prepared enough? Are you ready enough? How are you going to do this? What’s going to happen next? Pregnancy is one of the most magical times in a woman’s life, and a conscious woman wants to take a holistic view of her health. Having an OBGYN to monitor your case is imperative. Her role is to assess the health of baby and mommy as well as rule out any potential risk factors during pregnancy. He or she is also responsible for monitoring any complications that may arise during the pregnancy and manage many complex issues related to female reproductive health. There are many specialists within this field that serve in specialized areas in instances of infertility, pelvic floor reconstructions, and maternal, as well as fetal medicine.

A Naturopathic or Holistic Doctor serves a different role in your pregnancy. For one, they prepare your body for pregnancy. We call it tending to the 365 days before your pregnancy. This is the time and space that we develop the body for the state of health and wellness to sustain life. We monitor the mother’s nutrition, begin to remove irritants from the diet.

The following is our schedule for prenatal care by trimester.

1st Trimester – We provide nutritional as well as homeopathic support for symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, fatigue, constipation, headaches while also optimizing the nutrition for mommy and baby. We encourage rest and relaxation and educate mommies on the process of pregnancy, including what to look forward to and begin to create a birthing plan to include birthing providers. This is where the mother chooses an OBGYN for their case and commits to the various appointments related to her prenatal care.

2nd Trimester – We fine tune the diet from the first trimester and work to prevent many food-related conditions such as gestational diabetes, hypertension, stress management while pregnant, etc. We also coach the mother on adapting to the changes associated with pregnancy including body image imbalance, hormonal imbalances, and decision making. We begin to begin making recommendations for childbirth education and breastfeeding as well as discussions about choosing a doula and/or midwife to join the families case.

6.0 Holistic Prenatal Care 2

3rd Trimester – We support any new symptoms related to nutritional deficiencies such as leg cramps, insomnia, heartburn, back pain, etc. We begin the process of cultivating healthy vaginal bacteria. We start to make decisions on pediatric care for the baby once delivered and finalize the birthing plan to present to all the providers on the case. We start to discuss birthing procedures and prepare the mother for the process of delivery including the postpartum healing as well as the transition to motherhood. We relieve any last minute anxieties and often use modalities such as acupuncture, chiropractic care, hypnosis, etc. to cultivate minimal pain in pain-free holistic delivery needs.

Postpartum – We meet your precious newborn and encourage healthy patterns to transition to motherhood. We optimize diet and lifestyle as well s supplementation for breastfeeding. We discuss various imbalances that may occur with the baby and a holistic approach to treatment such as colic, ear infections, tongue ties, etc. We provide assessments for families looking to vaccinate including genetic testing as well as neurological testing to assess reaction risk factors. We also offer Homeoprophylaxis to those families not looking to vaccinate yet still would like to educate their babies immune system. We provide breastfeeding support where needing including lactation consulting, milk supply supplements, as well as many natural treatments to avoid antibiotics for the first 1,000 days of life (from conception to two years old). We discuss healing after birth both physically, mentally, spiritually, and emotionally while supporting you through the process of motherhood.

The Integration of a Naturopathic Doctor into your family planning is essential in developing a healthy child. Naturopaths are trained to be able to treat causes and prevent disease in the body. We highly recommend choosing a qualified naturopath to be able to help support your families health care before, during, and after pregnancy. We offer two consultation options for families with a one-hour consultation as well as a 15 mins complimentary wellness visit.

Listening to Your Gut; The Gut Health Connection

3.0 Listening to Your Gut

So, often people ignore proper gut health and may not know about gut health conditions. In fact, many people are completely oblivious to how their digestive system could be the cause of their various health complaints. Quite simply it all begins in the gut. Being present to your gut noises, gas, bloating, bowel habits, and more can be key indicators as to overall health and function of the system. The digestive systems house majority of our immune system, hormonal system, as well as our neurological system so keeping them in good health is key to maintaining our metabolic health. Let’s imagine every time that you eat you have heartburn or indigestion, or perhaps you feel a little nauseous, or maybe even vomit after meals. These are all signs that your digestive system may be off balance. Not having healthy bowel movements after drining plenty of water, as well as fiber can also prevent the body from being able to function on its own. Quite simply if your gut is off balance, then so is your health. Imagine that your gut is the foundation to which your health is built off of, kind of like your blood sugar. As an aspect of digestion if your blood sugar is off balance then so is the rest of your health. Naturopathic doctors, such as myself, work to stabilize and heal the digestive system in an effort to heal the overall system of the body. If a person is experiencing a thyroid complaint the first place we check is the balance in the gut. If a person is experiencing brain fog, to feeling fatigued, again our first check is the digestive system. If a person does not have healthy bowel movements without the assistance of a laxative, then we know the digestive system is off balance. our first priority must be to balance the gut, but how?

Listening to your gut II

I tend to approach gut healing from the top down. Meaning I begin with how a person is eating first by balancing their macronutrients. Are they eating too many fats and not enough carbs, or are they focusing mainly on protein and nothing else. Once we get a nice balance of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats then we can start the process of assisting someone in breaking their food down. This can look like enzymes, HCL support, or even food pairing and planning. This guidance is key to having a strong stable digestive system one that is a powerhouse of digestion and assimilation. As we continue to heal downward in the digestive tract we discover more imbalances such as in the small intestines as well as the large intestines which may be littered with infections and coinfections such as parasites, bacterias, fungus, or viruses. Working to heal the body of these foreign infections not only helps free up the digestive system but also the immune system which is commonly bogged down by these pathogens. Reinoculating the system with appropriate microbes such as pre and probiotics as well as key nutrients all found in the gut such as zinc, b complex, folic acid is critical in the restoration of total health and function of the digestive tract.

When healing the digestive system, we always look at the 4 R rule; Remove, Replace, Reinoculate, and Repair. Sometimes we Remove and then Repair while other times we always Reinoculate last. This is where the individual takes place. We focus on working with the individual with their own unique needs. Comprehensive Stool Analysis or Small Intestines Organic Acids Testing can all help to identify the underlying causes to which prevent the overall health and well being of the person. Evaluating nutrient deficiencies as well as increased toxic loads within the body can also help to support the imbalances within the system from both the GI system as well as any subsequent systems that may need support. Looking forward to teaching you more about the digestive system either in a class or a one on one consultation.

5 Ways to Spring into Health | Renewal Your Health

Spring into Health

It is that time of year, where things seemingly bloom. Our bodies transition from a dormant winter state into a refreshed awakening. We come out of hibernation, stretch from our restful nap, ready to take on what comes before us. A season change is an excellent time of renewal and transition to let go of what no longer serves us and move forward into the new. This renewal comes at just the right time as birds begin to resurface coming out to play, grass begins to resprout, and the sun begins to stay out longer to experience life. Springtime is the perfect renewal of our health as well, as our bodies and minds are an aspect of nature as well as creation. As we begin to live more in alignment with all that is around us, becoming more imbalanced and in harmony with who we are we rejoice as we shed our old skin to emerge a healthier, happier version of ourselves. The following tips are to encourage this renewal of spring and to bring light to perhaps areas of darkness within your lives.

  1. Begin to renew your relationships with gratitude. Look at the relationships within your life. Begin to become grateful for those that are in harmony, those that feed you, those that support you, nourish you and invigorate you. Also, reflect in gratitude for the relationships that you are not in harmony with your life. What have these relationships shown you about yourself, what can you be grateful for in these relationships, how have these relationships helped you grow and see yourself as a whole beautiful person of forgiveness.

  2. Reflect on your relationship with self. Are you feeding yourself with nourishing foods, are you provide enough hydration to yourself, are you moving, and providing yourself enough sleep in the evening time to be recharged in the morning.

  3. Check-in for a check-up, have you seen a doctor in a while. Have you had labs done within the last 6 months or year? Do you have symptoms or reoccurring health concerns that are not addressed? Get honest and present with how your body is actually progressing and reflect on are you building health or building disease processes.

  4. How are you managing your stress and emotional health? Do you drink a glass of wine every night or find yourself angry, frustrated, overly emotional. We are all human beings having a human experience. We all experience emotion differently. Some of us are confused by emotions, others overwhelmed by them, while others avoid them all together. Whichever type of person that you are it is perfect while beginning to build emotional intelligence is the key to transforming your physical health.

  5. Provide the space to grieve. Let go of all people, places, situations, circumstances, and experiences that do not serve you, while allowing yourself the space to grieve the process. Grieving a completion it allows for you to let go of the past, get it to nothing, in order to create a future from a space of nothing.
